Mr Rashid Zia MBBS BSc MRCSEd in Ophthalmology

Mr Rashid Zia graduated from King Edward Medical College in 1997 and completed his postgraduate training at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2005. Following a structured advanced surgical and medical glaucoma fellowship at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Zia is now based in Kent, UK. He serves as the Lead Ophthalmologist at New Hayesbank Ophthalmic Services NHS, Beltinge Eye Clinic NHS, and Kent Eye Centre.

Mr Zia’s expertise lies in the surgical and medical management of complex adult glaucoma. His skills encompass both penetrating and non-penetrating filtration surgeries, minimally and moderately invasive glaucoma procedures, as well as high-volume cataract surgery. He has a particular interest in selective laser trabeculoplasty, trabeculectomy, Preserflo, Ahmed glaucoma valve, Paul glaucoma implant, iStent inject, and other minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS).

He also super-specialises in the medical, laser, and surgical treatment of narrow angles and microphthalmos.

An enthusiastic educator and trainer, Mr Zia is deeply involved in teaching glaucoma and cataract surgery. He mentors senior surgeons worldwide through the prestigious Advanced Adult Glaucoma Fellowship, offered under the auspices of the British Pakistani Ophthalmic Society. His contributions to the field include numerous peer-reviewed publications, notably a landmark study on aerosol generation during cataract surgery, which received the distinguished American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Award. He is also a sought-after speaker at national and international ophthalmology conferences.

Mr Zia is a pioneer in delivering secondary and tertiary NHS ophthalmic services outside traditional NHS Trust hospitals in the UK and stands as one of the largest independent providers of NHS ophthalmic services nationally. He has successfully established several state-of-the-art NHS ophthalmic services commissioned through competitive national bidding processes.

In addition, Mr Zia played a key role in setting up the UK’s first comprehensive paper-free ophthalmology service by introducing electronic patient records in 2007.
